Amber in Medicine

Amber Ointment is a traditional Polish healthcare product containing Baltic Amber Extract and is used for the relief of aching joints and muscles.

Baltic Amber is unique to the southern shores of the Baltic Sea. Steeped in Polish medicinal tradition, its healing properties have been used for centuries in ointments, balms and tinctures.  Even amber jewellery is thought to assist in pain  relief.

The organic compounds found in Baltic Amber,  such as the terpene produced by confiers, have warming properties that help to relax muscles and tendons around the joints, improving blood circulation. Baltic Amber also contains succinic acid, a bio-stimulant and detoxifying agent, as well as fundamental minerals, such as magnesium, iron and calcium.

The Science behind the ointment

Scientific research has shown that the organic compounds found in Baltic Amber have a wide range of medicinal effects.

Baltic Amber is rich in terpene, a natural product found in conifer resins. The compounds found in the resin, such as Caren, D-Borneol and P-Cymene, gently warm the tendons around the joints, as well as improving blood circulation. Baltic Amber contains up to 8% succinic acid, a bio-stimulant which activates cell metabolism, reduces inflammation and detoxifies. And thanks to the multitude of minerals  and organic compounds inherent to Baltic Amber – including magnesium, iron, calcium and potassium – it is of unique benefit to our overall health.

Amber through the Ages

Since ancient times, from Europe to China, amber’s attractive appearance has allowed it to serve as both ornamental pieces and medicine. Amber necklaces were worn to  help in treating upper airway disorders such as bronchitis and asthma, and assisted in alleviating both  tonsillitis and toothaches. But above all, amber was known to be a great healer of rheumatic disorders – amber bracelets were worn to reduce or assist remission of arthritic bumps. In the Nineteenth Century, chemists continued to use amber in medicine by preparing various amber balms and tinctures.  It was around this time that amber was increasingly used in cosmetics.

Today,  advocates of natural medicine promote amber as a key element in helping us to regain the natural balance of our electromagnetic fields. Rub a piece of amber on some wool to see how the amber produces a negative charge.
